The Enviro-Mark programme enables systematic development and improvement of a credible environmental management system (EMS). Third party certification ensures accurate and consistent environmental management claims.
So what is an EMS? An EMS is simply a planned approach to managing environmental impacts. Organisations identify the significant environmental impacts arising from everything they do and then develop plans to prevent or reduce those impacts. We can help an organisation develop, implement and maintain an EMS. Whether you are starting from scratch or have existing systems in place, our EMS solutions can help you improve performance.
We help you identify the actual and potential environmental impacts of every aspect of your operation and support you in reducing those impacts. Compliance with the programme is independently verified annually to maintain certification.
Enviro-Mark certification indicates a third party verified environmental management system claim based on continual improvement. Environmental management systems (EMS) ensure understanding and improving a company’s environmental impacts. Organisations can certify a full company or individual sites and achieve one of five levels of certification as the EMS is developed.
Member organisations receive all the tools and resources necessary to implement a credible EMS. In return, you reduce risk, ensure legislative compliance and improve efficiency throughout your organisation. Following an independent audit, we certify organisations to one of five levels. Enviro-Mark Bronze, the first level, ensures legislative compliance, including health & safety requirements. Enviro-Mark Gold indicates an ongoing measurable EMS. Enviro-Mark Diamond, the final step, meets and exceeds the requirements of ISO 14001. Learn more about each level below.

Our five step certification culminates in a certification that meets and exceeds the requirements of ISO 14001:2015 for organisational environmental performance. Depending on where your organisation is on its sustainable journey, you can apply for certification at any of the Enviro-Mark programme levels. No matter which level you choose, we provide all the tools and guidance you will need to succeed.

Enviro-Mark Bronze certified organisations have thought about which activities their EMS must control. Their EMS could cover one or all sites or a specific part of their operation. They must explain any reasoning behind excluding areas. They also meet any applicable health, safety and environmental legislation for the areas of their organisation covered by the EMS.
Enviro-Mark Silver certified organisations have identified key environmental issues, including any potential risks or opportunities and understand which of these are significant. They have developed a formal environmental policy covering their position on pollution prevention, risk management, and continual improvement of environmental impacts. They maintain legal compliance.
Enviro-Mark Gold certified organisations have developed a comprehensive plan to help them achieve their goals outlined in their formal environmental policy. They are measuring their impacts so that they can better manage them. At this stage, the organisation has the basis of a robust EMS in place.
Enviro-Mark Platinum certified organisations have thoroughly documented the systems and procedures developed for environmental management. They know who is responsible for each action required by the EMS. They are collecting and analysing useful data to ensure ongoing improvement to environmental performance. They train staff as needed to ensure they can deliver the EMS.
Enviro-Mark Diamond certified organisations have a robust EMS in place. They have internal systems to ensure that their plans and policies are followed and to identify any opportunities for change and improvement. They have top management commitment to the EMS and its continuing stability.
Once you join the Enviro-Mark programme, you will be given access to our tools, templates, and guidance notes, which will help you identify any actual and potential environmental aspects and impacts, including a checklist detailing the specific requirements of the level of certification sought. You will also be given a key contact who will provide guidance and resources to help you in your certification journey.
A small to medium sized organisation can typically achieve Bronze certification in 3-6 months by spending a few hours a week on the management system. The time it takes to prepare for and successfully pass an audit varies from business to business, depending on how well developed your existing systems are when you start. As a rough guide a few hours per week by a person with some systems knowledge would see a small to medium-sized company progress to Enviro-Mark Gold in about two years. The time and resources needed each year may reduce as you develop and improve systems and records. We can help you develop a realistic project plan to guide your progress.
Once your organisation has prepared the required materials and plans for that level of certification, an independent audit will ensure programme compliance and permit certification to be issued. Upon being certified, you will be given Enviro-Mark certification logos to use in promoting your achievement. Those organisations certified as Enviro-Mark Gold or above can use the logo on product packaging.
This is an annual cycle and each year the programme will help keep you on a journey of continual improvement. Your certification can help your organisation meet tender requirements, satisfy stakeholder demands, demonstrate good corporate citizenship, identify and manage risks, develop business efficiencies, achieve cost savings and gain market access.
Membership subscriptions are based on the size and complexity of your organisation. Auditing costs are additional and based on the time required by the auditor to complete the on-site audits. These factors mean that costs vary for each organisation. As a guide, for a small, simple, office based organisation with 1-2 offices and under 15 employees, the membership starts at approximately $2600 annually but prices vary depending on size and complexity.
